MYspace?

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

Based on the overwhelming demand by my fans to have a larger internet presence (and the fact that Tom had one so I had to get one), I opened up a MySpace account. Well, when I signed up for it I apparently used the wrong email account. Thus, I can no longer login to accept or send friend invites. Also (and most embarassingly) I can’t update my initial and NOT hilarious profile. Go ahead and take a look: http://www.myspace.com/davidschulte

The company I work for (I’d rather let that stay anonymous, so lets just call it “Fidelity Investments” for now) recently went through what they (”Fidelity“) called a “Re-Slotting” for all their technical associates. What this meant was a consolidation of around 8 or 9 job titles to about 4.  For example, the “SOFTWARE ENGINEER/DEVELOPER” job family would now be broken down as: Associate Software Engineer, Software Engineer, Senior Software Engineer, and Principal Software Engineer/Developer (which could also be Development Manager). From there it continues up the regular management hierarchy (Director, Vice President, etc etc etc).

So, before this went into effect, I was just a regular ‘ol “SOFTWARE ENGINEER/DEVELOPER.” This morning my boss pulled me aside in a conference room and told me that during this re-slotting they looked over the Role Summaries and Job Descriptions and decided to “slot me” as a Senior. SWEET. However, during this process no one is allowed to get any more money, as the point of this whole thing is to position people into the title for the job they are doing. That’s fine, I thought, since I’m more concerned about the respect I feel I deserve and my overall career opportunities at this point, and the money will come later (which it turns out probably will, but I don’t feel like going into that).

She then went on to say that in addition to condensing the number of job titles, they’ve also created several new job families. What this meant for me was that instead of being a Senior Software Engineer, I would now be a Senior Web Developer.  Now, this is essentially the same thing, but to me it just doesn’t have the same appeal as Senior Software Engineer. Am I crazy, or does that make sense to anyone else (I’m looking at you, T)
